GreenTechMedia, an industry publication covering the green technology and solar industry, reports that Energy Innovations is in the midst of being acquired by a strategic investor. The report quoted un-named sources close to the firm. Energy Innovations is backed by both Idealab and Mohr Davidow Ventures. The firm develops concentrating photovoltaic (CPV) systems, which use mirrors to concentrate sunlight onto solar cells, a technique which makes better use of limited space for solar panels. The company had been targeting the commercial market--particularly, office buildings and retail locations--with its offerings.

Parchment--which started in Los Angeles, and continues to have offices here--said the funding was led by Salmon River Capital, and also included Novak Biddle Partners and Blackboard CEO and President Michael Chasen. Parchment was formerly known as Docufide, but recently changed its name and relocated its corporate headquarters to Scottsdale, Arizona--part of the hiring of former Blackboard founder Michael Pittinsky as its new CEO.
A new startup incubator and coworking space in the Los Angeles area--Voivoda Labs--said this week that it is looking to looking to vet new startups in the area to join its newly built incubator in Glendale. Voivoda Labs--headed by Val Babajov, the former CEO of WebMessenger--said it is looking to vet around 15 startups via a pitch event later this month, to help secure investment for the winner. Voivoda says that Babajov has ties to the Band of Angels, Tech Coast Angels, Pasadena Angels, Keiretsu Forum Angel networks.

The firm said it is leasing private offices and individual workstations in a co-working environment for startups. VoiVodaLabs says on the site that the cost of space at its incubator starts at $350 a month for a workstation, with private offices from $1000 a month. Charging space is unusual for the vast majority of accelerator programs to emerge recently in the area--most offer up free space as part of being accepted by those programs, and also offer seed funding--but the new group is more in line of the traditional incubator model, which revolves around low cost, tech-enabled office space.

The selection of Musk is particularly well suited to Caltech, which runs the Jet Propulsion Laboratory. The Jet Propulsion Laboratory got its start developing some of the first American rockets for the U.S. government. JPL and Caltech recently celebrated the 75th anniversary of the first rocket experiments which became the site of the Jet Propulsion Laboratory. SpaceX has developed the first, commercially developed rockets to deliver a payload to space, and is getting set for its first mission to the International Space Station in February.
